“I should have been more careful”: Beware of the surprise bill at the car rental company

During this summer season, reports of mishaps when renting a vehicle are multiplying. Philippe saw his bill double... after returning the keys. Our advice to avoid disappointments.
By Matthieu PelloliWhat exactly happened at the counter? On Monday, April 7, at around 9:15 p.m., Philippe, tired after a long journey, picked up a rental car from one of the Europcar agencies located in Toulouse ( Haute-Garonne ). A Volkswagen, to be precise, for which he had already paid the 271 euro bill online last January.
Philippe has to go to Spain. A friendly, attentive young woman greets him. She offers "an upgrade" for an additional 70 euros. A polite refusal. She then offers "additional assistance." Another refusal, polite as ever, but categorical. "I don't want anything, just the best rate, the one I got on your website," Philippe mutters, eager to leave. The agent gives up, at least on the surface. She hands over the three copies of the contract to be signed, Philippe scribbles his signature without rereading anything, and turns on his heel.
